Things I Wish I Had Known Before Freshman Year

5. Be yourself and get involved.

Even if you’re shy, try getting involved in something you’re interested in, like a club on campus or volunteering. You can just try it out and then decide whether or not you like it. You really never know until you actually go out and do it. Also, always be yourself and stay true to your own interests. That way you’ll find friends in the big city and get to know yourself even better.

4. Make time for yourself.

Balancing fashion business school, internships in fashion, and work can become extremely overwhelming. Always stay organized and try doing assignments in advance, which will help your stress level later on. Be old-fashioned and use a planner to write things down. Maybe do some yoga here and there and give yourself a day off once in a while to catch your breath.

3. Be independent and be wise.

Think about every choice you make. You have a lot of opportunities in New York and you have to really pick out the ones that will be best for you. Do your research when you choose to volunteer for fashion companies and try to make your experiences meaningful. This also applies to making wise decisions about when it is a good idea to save more money and when to go out with friends vs. when to stay in and catch up on work.

2. It’s perfectly fine to change your mind.

I’m not going to lie, I first began to consider fashion school in the hopes of becoming the next Whitney Port or Heidi Montag, flying between New York and LA and helping organize red carpet events. As I began to realize that I actually do have the skills for these jobs and also that LIM could bring me opportunities that would lead me to where I want to be one day, I decided to go for it. However, I realized many of the things I thought I wanted to do at first don’t interest me as much as some other new career fields I’ve learned about. I realized I’m not so much interested in fashion styling, but I am very interested in social media and event planning. You might decide at some point that fashion is not solely what you want to do anymore, but if you decide to stay at LIM, there are many more career options you can pursue besides careers in fashion, such as in PR, marketing and other areas of business.

1. College flies by. Enjoy it.

College is meant to be exciting and fun. It brings you into a new atmosphere and introduces you to many new people. Although it can get stressful at times, make sure you are doing what you love and what will eventually make you happy.
