One of my favorite phrases to remind myself of quite often is, “great minds discuss ideas.” No matter where we are or what we do, the opportunity to share thoughts and knowledge is one of the most fascinating elements of the world in which we live. Just think about it. Each of us is inherently unique, which means that we each have our own, individual vision of what is happening around us. We can share what we feel is important, and embrace what others deem significant.
Since becoming a student at LIM College, I have had the opportunity to witness and take part in some incredibly stimulating and meaningful conversations. Although much of our lives are focused on things that are tangible and concrete, I find it fulfilling to bask in the intangibles—ideas, thoughts, visions. These are concepts that provide meaning to our lives and infuse creativity into our world.
At an LIM College event called the Fashion Insiders Series, students are given the opportunity to hear industry professionals speak their mind about everything from fashion and culture, to interning and important tips to know as a young professional. This is an incredible way to gain insight on various career paths, to network, and to hear inspiring and thought-provoking conversation.
Guests in the past have included Elle Magazine’s Creative Director, Mr. Joe Zee, and even Patricia Field, former Sex and the City costume designer. This past week I was able to hear author Rachelle Bergstein speak about her book, Women from the Ankle Down: The Story of Shoes and How They Define Us. It was an hour of my time well spent. Quite frankly, it was fun to ponder ideas and thoughts that do not necessarily occur on a daily basis.
I also attended the LIM College event Fashion: Now and Then, a conference coordinated by the LIM College Library. I spent all day Friday listening to an array of speakers present their work, research, or thoughts pertaining to business, fashion, and the experiences they have had the opportunity to partake in.
I particularly enjoyed the keynote Q&A conversation featuring Harper’s Bazaar Editor-in-Chief Glenda Bailey, and accomplished interior designer Alessandra Branca. They spoke of their views on the correspondence between fashion and interiors, and shared thoughts on fashion’s evolution and its role in our world. I was left inspired and moved by two successful, strong women.
As an LIM College student, you will be provided with opportunities on a consistent basis. My advice to you is to take advantage of them! Remember, “Great minds discuss ideas.”
I have no doubt that you have visions for our world and unique thoughts that are yearning to be heard. Voice them with others and then take in theirs.
We are given one chance to live and learn in a world that is quite fascinating, so never let an absolutely inspiring and stimulating conversation slip through your fingers. Share your great mind!
Until next week, happy fall my friends!
