What it’s Really Like to Intern at a Magazine (Spoiler Alert! It’s Not like "The Devil Wears Prada")

This semester I secured a beauty internship working with both Redbook and Woman’s Day Magazine, both of which are owned by the Hearst Corporation. When I walked into the building for my interview I was overwhelmed with how beautiful and hi-tech it was. With 16 elevators going to 46 floors, you could say I was a little nervous.

However, I finally made it up to the 22nd floor and I sat down with my interviewer Paige, who would turn out to be my supervisor. The interview lasted about 15 minutes as we went over my experience and the role. When I left, I felt confident, but unsure of how it went. I found out that I had gotten it a week later and was thrilled!

My first day consisted of getting my bearings in the office and setting up my very own Hearst email account. Similar to many magazines in Hearst Tower, Redbook and Woman’s Day share a floor. Many of the employees work on both magazines either on the editorial or marketing side. I was lucky enough to get experience with both magazines’ editorial teams.

womans day mag.jpgOne of the great things about working at a magazine is that you are experiencing something new every day. Most of my daily responsibilities included organizing the beauty closet, researching products and story ideas, maintaining press filings by season, monitoring and responding to reader emails and corresponding with beauty brands and publicists directly to request credit information and product samples.

Other occasional tasks included transcribing interviews, attending desk side meetings with brands, assisting with web stories, attending editorial meetings, pulling contest winners, and assisting with events for both magazines. Perks included free products, and a lot of them! I’m a beauty junkie and this was one of my favorite aspects of the internship There is also always an abundance of free snacks, books, coffee, and magazines.

Putthenailinit.jpgRedbook and Woman’s Day are both very socially conscious as well. During my time there we held a Beauty Sale that raised $4,000 for Hearst sponsored charities. Woman’s Day also sponsored an event and social media campaign with Safe Horizons in their #PutTheNailInIt movement to support Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This internship didn’t involve getting coffee or running errands. I was completely immersed in the company culture and an integral part of the editorial team. I would recommend Redbook and Woman’s Day with the highest regard to anyone looking to really get their start in the magazine industry.
