UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Interning at Chanel

posted by LIM College

Let me tell you a little bit more about my experiences here at LIM College. Students here are quite different to be honest, some of us have classes on Tuesdays & Thursdays; intern on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays; then work Saturday and Sunday. We all have very hectic schedules and are very career-minded, as we know what we want and we never stop going for it.

Last year when I was a freshman, I had to complete my first fashion internship in New York City as a sales associate. Since it’s a bit harder for international students to look for an internship, I figured I would either go big or go home. So I went up and down 5th Avenue to hand in my resume to all the big stores that you can imagine because I knew they won’t pay me and I can’t be paid anyway, so I thought that would be perfect. It was pretty frightening doing that, but a few days after I started to get some calls from fashion companies. I still remember the sound on the other end of the phone.

“Hi Aaron, this is XXX from Chanel, would you be able to come by tomorrow? We would love to talk to you about an internship opportunity here with us.” I will never forget that feeling, my tingling fingers, my spinning head, it was just so unbelievable.

I went to the meeting at Chanel the next day and they offered me the job right there and then. I never thought being trilingual would be such an advantage for me in life, but that was one of the reasons they chose to hire me. There are a lot of tourists that come to the Chanel store to shop.  I remember working on Black Friday and the holiday weekend. I was translating and selling non-stop for three days. I was beyond exhausted after that, but I have never had such a feeling of accomplishment.

One of the perks of working at Chanel is that you will see celebrities. One day this tall woman walked in, she had a pair of sunglasses and a big fur hat on. Once she took those accessories off, I immediately recognized her. Adele was shopping in Chanel. It was insane. I was helping her with shoes and handbags, the whole time remaining professional, even though I was screaming on the inside.

That’s just one of the fun stories I have from working there. If you ever bump into me on campus, maybe I can tell you more. Working in Chanel is definitely one of the best experiences I have ever had. It may have been exhausting but it was so much fun and I learned a ton. And this is just one a part of my crazy life in New York City…

Stay tuned.

Aaron
