Make Fashion Your Profession

posted by LIM College

Hey there! My name is Dasha and I am originally from Moscow. This is my third year at LIM College and I’m a junior, majoring in Fashion Marketing with a concentration in Public Relations & Event Planning. I live off-campus, renting an apartment in the East Village. I have been involved in the fashion industry since I was little because my mother owns a few clothing boutiques in Moscow.

Before starting a four-year Bachelor’s program, I came to LIM for summer courses when I was still at Moscow Economic High School. That time really helped me a lot and I explored the city inside out. That’s when I decided for myself that New York City and the fashion industry are truly united, and that this is a perfect place for me to pursue my dreams.

When I first moved to New York, I didn’t know anybody, but I had countless ambitions and expectations. Therefore, I started making connections right away. My first internship was at Alexander Nash where they make bespoke suits for men. At that internship I met a lot of actors, designers, and models, etc.

My second internship was at Henrik Vibskov Boutique which is a Danish, avant-garde boutique in SoHo (the trendiest neighborhood in Manhattan). It was such a blast!  I got to meet the designer and had my hands on all kinds of things: photography, preparing for events, working with clientele on the sales floor, as well as assisting at market week. There I met numerous artists who work in music, art and the fashion industry.

My third internship has just started at Liberty Fairs New York, a men’s trade show that takes place in NYC as well as in Las Vegas. It showcases 250 contemporary brands and I will be doing PR and marketing duties. I am so excited about this opportunity and I have to thank LIM College for that. At LIM, students have to take three required internship classes and it really puts your name out there, and builds your resume, plus you get incredible experience with respected companies.

So if you are still pondering about leaving your hometown in order to follow your dreams in a city full of life, lights and love—don’t doubt your dreams or yourself, because it really is worth it!
