Over winter break I participated in the study abroad Cross-Cultural Analysiscourse, which gives students the opportunity to study the business of fashion abroad. Our class went sight-seeing and visited Spanish fashion brands in Barcelona & Madrid.
We visited the headquarters of Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada who is known for her bright, bold colors. They have collaborated with a lot of famous brands including Kleenex, Disney, and El Corte Inglés, which is a major department store in Europe. We witnessed the products at the conceptual stage at the atelier and then saw the finished product displayed at the store.
The next brand we visited was Loewe, a Spanish luxury fashion company located in Madrid, also known as Casa Loewe. It is the latest flagship store and consists of three floors. The décor includes designs from various Spanish artists, such as Edmund de Waal, the late Richard Smith, Gloria Garcia Lorca, and Sir Howard Hodgkin. The store is designed with creative director, Jonathan Anderson’s retail concept, he also included a flower shop just next to the store.
We witnessed The Art of Shoes exhibition at the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas in Madrid, which was a tribute to Manolo Blahnik. The designs on display span from the early 1970’s to modern day. The collection included over 200 of Mr. Blahnik’s favorite shoes and 80 original drawings, which provided us with insight into his private archive.
