Three LIM students were selected to receive a total of $3,500 in scholarships during the 2018 Accessories Council competition held at LIM College on November 26.
Participating students worked on concepts for new fashion accessory creations throughout the course of the Fall semester in Professor Andrea Kennedy’s Product Development and Merchandising class. The budding product developers then presented their creations to a panel of industry professionals.
During the judging portion of the competition, each participant gave a presentation on the targeted market demographic for their product, the type of materials used, and the inspiration for the concept. Included in many of the presentations was an explanation of how the product wed comfort with functionality and style with sustainability.
For LIM student Milnalis Diese, her inspiration came from her passion for flowers. As she developed her custom-made earrings, she thought about the type of jewelry that her mother would like to wear. “They’re probably big and colorful, yet lightweight,” Diese said.
The judges for this year’s Accessories Council Competition were Karen Giberson, President of the Accessories Council; Susan Moniello, Vice President of Design & Product Development at Marchon Eyewear; Beth Vogel, Senior Vice President of Judith Ripka; and Pamela Linton, LIM College’s Vice President of Industry Relations.
“The judges selected the projects they believed were the most innovative, as well those that best showed all the steps of product development and merchandising,” Kennedy said.
The following scholarships were awarded:
First prize ($2000): Ciara Christian for her proposal for a handbag featuring a cushioned shoulder strap
Second prize ($750 each): Monique Sullivan for solar-powered sunglasses and Milnalis Diese for lightweight, design-your-own floral earrings
