Getting caught in the rain is one of many things that tick New Yorkers off. Walking from place to place hardly crosses our minds any more, except when you hear the dreaded boom of thunder and see a sharp strike of lightening. Whether it's a raging storm or an unexpected rain cloud, here are some ways to be prepared for a rainy day!
Embrace the scaffolding.
Constant renovations are just something you have to accept in NYC. Instead of whining about the hideous appearance and noise from construction, use the scaffolding to block the rain. The great part is that you can see construction from a block away. Try walking on the side of the street that's covered to help keep dry!
Find the fastest route.
Even if you’re 100% sure of where you are going, it doesn’t hurt to check Google Maps for a faster route. There could be a subway line to take that eliminates the amount of treading through the rain you need to do.
Carry an umbrella.
Having an umbrella is the easiest way to avoid the rain. Get a cute pocket-sized umbrella and keep it in your purse or bag. Be mindful that basically every person walking down the street is bound to have an umbrella, so safety is a must. Keep your eyes up and checking for potential victims of your umbrella.
Have a hooded jacket.
In general, it's a good idea to keep a jacket with you, especially in the constantly changing weather of NYC. A jacket with a hood is a great way to beat the rain. Just think, who wants to lug out an umbrella when you only have a short distance to travel.
Check the forecast.
While sometimes the weather forecast is wrong, most of the time its pretty close to what actually happens. Every morning when you wake up, or every night before going to bed, check your weather app to see what’s happening. If its clear skies and sunny all day, you might be just fine with leaving that umbrella at home, but it doesn’t hurt to plan ahead.
