Raising Awareness Through #TealTuesday

The Office of Student Life (OSL) partnered with It’s On Us the week of October 21, hosting events throughout the week that invited students to understand the effects of sexual assault.

It’s On Us is an organization that “combats college sexual assault by engaging young people and changing campus culture”—awareness events included painting sessions, art exhibits, and Teal Tuesday.

One thing I noticed about this campaign was that students wanted to learn more about this organization and were genuinely eager to participate.

For Teal Tuesday, OSL set up a photo booth for everyone to take pictures in their teal colors. For anyone who forgot to wear teal, OSL provided teal ribbons students could wear to show support for survivors of sexual assault. At a table during the event, OSL discussed students’ rights relating to the amnesty policy under the "Enough is Enough" law and provided brochures with additional support information, including resources both on- and off-campus.

Each student that visited the table was offered a cupcake to participate in a photo. The yummy reward even came with vegan options! Students were able to have their picture taken and tagged in the student life Instagram story.

The week was successful, and I hope LIM does it again with more of a push to engage male students. I’d recommend doing a larger event that would create an opportunity to have an educational lecture or for people to share stories of sexual assault, which will help increase awareness event further.
