Why NYC Is The Only Place to Study Fashion

posted by Adeline Affonso, Director of Admissions

Fashion marketing, visual merchandising, fashion media... whatever field in the business of fashion you aspire to work in, there is no better place to start your studies than in a city that's often been hailed as a fashion capital of the world: the big apple. What exactly makes New York City the ideal place for college students interested in fashion? Here are three reasons.

1. The internship and career opportunities. The city's five boroughs—Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx—are home to approximately 900 fashion company corporate headquarters, 5,000 fashion showrooms and studios, and 75 major fashion trade shows and market weeks. From Limited Brands to Macy's, Women's Wear Daily to Vogue, ABC Carpet & Home to Saks Fifth Avenue, big names are everywhere you look—which means work opportunities abound. (And because of our proximity to it all—LIM College is ideally located right in Midtown—our students intern and land careers at the hottest names in fashion.)

2. The access to experienced faculty. Being in a city where some of the biggest fashion decisions are made, where major newspapers and magazines are published, and where job opportunities in fashion attract recruits from across the globe all means that the people you'll be surrounded by are the creme of the crop in in the fashion industry. Fortunately for LIM, we're able to take full advantage: our professors and lecturers have held high-level positions at places like Macy's, Bergdorf Goodman, and Bare Necessities. They've had their work published in pubs like The New York Times and Rolling Stone, and they've worked for clients like J.Crew and Top Shop. What this all means for LIM students: real-world experience they can learn from and invaluable connections they can tap into.

3. The endless sources of inspiration. Nothing will motivate you to succeed in the business of fashion more than being constantly surrounded by people, museums, galleries, and events that celebrate the industry in big and small ways. Even just walking down the streets of Manhattan is like attending a fashion show—so many unique styles that will make you think, how would I market that, what could I write about that, which store is that from?. And of course, there are actual shows and events like Fashion Week (where many LIM students successfully seek out volunteer opportunities). Between the sights and fast-paced energy of the New York City, you'll never be without inspiration.

If you haven't already been to NYC (or even if you have), schedule a visit to LIM College. We'd love to show you how we take advantage of everything our hometown offers and why our students absolutely love it here.
