The Importance of Internships

As an LIM student it is necessary to do a retail internship during freshman year and a corporate internship during sophomore year. I think the most vital asset we attain through our experiences as interns is taking any and every opportunity to find our niche. Once you’re in the fashion industry, you’ll become fascinated with every detail of your surroundings and will be eager to try it all.

At my corporate internship I was presented the opportunity to completely immerse myself into the world behind the scenes of Seventeen magazine. The evident passion and drive that emitted through my personality and work ethic landed me the option to intern in the Fashion closet and I was enthralled from day one.

From intern runs through the various clients we collaborate with, to market appointments viewing new fashion collections; assisting on photo shoots at venues like the Plaza hotel, Milk studios or Chelsea Piers with our Senior Fashion editor; assisting the Senior Fashion Marketing editor in the casting process for Tyra Banks’s Fiercely Real Model Contest; being cast as a “Real Girl” model for Seventeen in two separate issues of the magazine -- and even appearing on the Today Show to model for Prom -- the experience was incomparable and absolutely irreplaceable.

The opportunities that accompany living in New York City, along with the leverage of being a student at LIM, will open endless doors and provide you with the experiences some would only dream of. So you could either make a mood board with the basis of what you aspire to achieve in your life and career, or you could come to LIM College and make it your reality. So what’s your choice?
