Football Homecoming Games or Fashion Week?

When most people think of heading off to college they consider huge dorms, a packed campus, football games, a dining hall; the whole nine yards. As a student at LIM College, or any city college in general, it is simple enough to realize that we live our lives far from the norm of your typical college student. Moving into my first dorm room at the LIM Residence Hall at the age of 17, little did I know that just a year later I would be living in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, working, interning and creating my own business; living the life of someone far beyond my years.

What brought this point of perspective to my attention was visiting my best friend at Southern Connecticut State University. From the moment I arrived on campus I realized quite a few things. For one, the way us LIM students dress is almost comical to the classic college student. (We can wear yoga pants outside of the gym?!) Walking through an actual campus was nice, but I have to admit I did miss my concrete jungle playground that is New York City.

The contrast of cars to subways, dining halls to kitchens and restaurants, dorms to apartments and football homecoming games to Fashion Week; we operate in alternate worlds. Day one of freshman year, we’re tossed into the real world of networking opportunities and every sense of freedom leading us to sink or swim. Some may consider the way we’re shaped and the direction we’re guided as difficult to cope with, yet the processes and experiences drive us to maturing more through the duration of a semester than some may reach throughout all four years of college.
