What is the SLAB Club?

The SLAB Club essentially plans most of the student life events that take place throughout the semesters. SLAB stands for Student Life Activity Board. This is a great way to make new friends. Attending the events allows students to socialize with peers they've never met before. The SLAB Club is great for getting a sense of what it feels like to plan large or small events, teaching you how to put together gatherings.

For events, the club must select a time, location, how they will promote the event, creating an Eventbrite, deciding on props and games, buying decorations, creating flyers, and so much more. This is also a great club for students who want to share their own ideas for events that may not exist yet. This club allows students to develop leadership and teamwork skills.

What events have we created in the past?

We try our best to create events around holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Diwali, and more. We had a fun Halloween party last year that included games and painting pumpkins.

We also created a silent 70's disco party, where everyone had fun with friends while listening to different music through headphones. It's a night to dress up and have fun!

Another popular event we create every month involves selecting a cool restaurant to eat from. Students RSVP through Eventbrite for the restaurant we chose, and the club pays for everyone's meal. This is a great way to try new foods in NYC and explore in the city.

The first week back from winter break we had an event at a rooftop ice skating rink. This was again funded by the club's budget, and we got to spend a few hours ice skating and sipping hot cocoa. I met students who commute and some who are graduate students, who I never would have otherwise met!

How do I get involved?

Keep an eye out for emails relating to upcoming meetings. These are held during the lunch hour. Currently, we might not have big in-person meetings, but Zoom meetings or smaller gatherings are always an option.

Why is it important to be involved in a club?

Clubs allow you to make friends, get involved, and gain or improve on skills. It is important to be involved on campus because of the many doors it opens. You could meet your new best friend or your next roommate. Getting involved means you could list on your resume or LinkedIn that you are the leader of a club at your college.

And if you don't see a club that fits one of your interests, you can always start your own club!
