What's to Love at LIM: The Cross-Cultural Analysis Program
posted by Kristina Ortiz, Dean of Admissions
We’d say it’s pretty obvious that studying abroad is one of the best and most invaluable experiences you can have at LIM. From Rome to Taiwan, you'll gain the international fashion knowledge that sets you apart in your career, regardless of what you choose to study. But between classes, internships, and jobs, you might be in a bind committing to something long-term. Luckily, we have just the thing: our Cross-Cultural Analysis (CCA) program. See how this alternative can hit just the nomadic spot.
But first—where’s our next stop? We’re going to Madrid and Barcelona from January 4-14, 2018! The deadline for applications has passed for the coming year, but don't worry, we'll have more amazing locations for the 2019, 2020, and future editions of the program.. With accommodations and travel all pre-arranged—including a payment plan and scholarships—all you really need to do is pack your bags.
So, what’s CCA really all about? Travel with us and you’ll…
…get a taste of two cities. Every winter break, approximately 15 undergraduate students and alumni are led by faculty for a 10-day program in two different European cities. We take our time thinking about where our students can have the most well-rounded travel with both a cultural and fashion industry perspective. That’s why you’ll see the best sights—from famous museums and art galleries to ancient monuments—along with visits to fashion companies and shops, new and old. (This past year in Florence we stopped at the Scuola del Cuoio, or Leather School, where we observed artisans practicing the traditional craft of leatherworking, which has been performed in the same neighborhood since medieval times!)
…boost your fashion sense. While you may already be a fashionista from living at LIM—since New York City is the fashion capital of the world, of course—there's nothing wrong with absorbing a little international fashion perspective, too. Maybe you'll take home a few ideas and share them with the city. (There will also be plenty of time to do some shopping.)
…receive credits for your travels. Before you even step foot overseas, we want to make sure you're well-versed in the history of the program's destination. Starting in October, you'll take a three-credit online class and learn about the cultural and fashion backgrounds of both cities. When you come back from your travels you'll complete a project based on your experience and what you've learned abroad.
…possibly reconsider studying abroad (or traveling) longer. More often than not, this short-term program just isn't enough for our students. Sometimes they fall in love with one of the cities we visit, and return for an entire semester. Or, they realize they love traveling and the global component of the fashion industry, and consider a more specific major (let's say, international business). Plus, we also offer other short-term study abroad programs over the summer that are worth checking out.
…be one step ahead of the game. Our favorite part about this program is that it's valuable for all of our students of every major. You won't find a single fashion-related job that doesn't include an international component and having international experience on your resume, whether short- or long-term, will always make you stand out to employers. Only 10% of American college students go abroad. That means you'll have an experience that sets you a part from 90% of other applicants. We'd claim that's hard to beat.
