As most people know, the top risk factor for skin cancer is unprotected exposure to the UV radiation. This includes sunlight or tanning booths. Now that summer is right around the corner, and everyone wants a healthy glowing tan, I have tips and tricks to help you have glowing sun-kissed skin and to help you stay protected.
Apply sunscreen before your skin hits the sun.
In order for sunscreen to be fully effective it needs to absorb into the skin. Applying it 20-30 minutes before you see the sun not only will confirm protection but also saves you from applying in the heat, which is never fun. I recommend the Neutrogena Ultimate Sport Sunscreen Spray, $12. It’s keeps the skin feeling hydrated and moisturized with a Helioplex complex that will strengthen the skin against UV rays.
Never use body sunscreen on the face.
Only use tanning oils with SPF.
If you’re planning to ditch the sunscreen for a day and strictly use tanning oil, never be unprotected. Tanning oils with SPF 15 and up will not guarantee that you wont burn, but they will guarantee some protection. Also when tanning strictly with oils, make sure you are in and out of shaded areas and always keeping hydrated with water. Tanning oil I always go with is the Banana Boat Protective Tanning Oil, $8.
