The week of October 17 Professor Robert Conrad and I hopped across the pond to jolly old England. Our purpose was twofold — to guest lecture at the London College of Fashion and to visit two of LIM’s newest study abroad partners.

We spoke to over five hundred students over four days in classes ranging from 20 to 100. The students were from the London College of Fashion's graduate school as well as their undergraduate division. Our talks covered various topics, including the luxury market in the U.S., fashion careers in the U.S., global retail, and the changing face of the fashion industry.

During our free time we walked the streets of London and, according to Bob’s Fitbit, we logged close to 50 miles during the week. For those who have not been to London, the streets are way more crowded than those in NYC! One day it literally took me 15 minutes to just to get out of the “tube” (subway) station!

Loom_0.jpgWhile Bob was lecturing I visited the University for the Creative Arts in Epsom, outside of London. Situated on a lovely suburban campus, it focuses on the creative side (hence the name) of the fashion industry. More rural and less expensive than London proper, and only a short 35-minute train ride into London’s Waterloo station.

We also took a day trip to Scotland to visit Heriot Watt, a college of 600 hundred students located about 50 minutes south of Edinburgh with a strong focus on textiles. The setting is also a bit rural. It’s a great place for our students to experience Scotland and a mere 50 minutes from Edinburgh airport, from which one can easily reach any city in Europe.
