What Every Graduate Student Do This Summer: Join a Professional Organization

Yes, you're busy during the summer between classes at LIM, internships, and work, but there are 24 hours in the day. ;-) During these sultry summer days be sure to find the time to continue to build your career path. Joining a group related to your chosen profession is a great way to do just that.

Every profession has its own associations that allows professionals and students to meet up for seminars and social events, as well as offering a wealth of tips and resources, plus opportunities to find a mentor, and some awesome chances to network!

If you haven’t done so already, research what organizations serve your major. Most do charge a fee for membership, but if you’re a student, they are markedly less expensive.

Let’s take a look at the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), which is the nation’s largest community for public relations and communications professionals. A graduate student membership is $60, whereas if you had more than three years of experience the price is $300.

Also, check out the New York chapters of organizations you’re interested in. There’s a New York Chapter of PRSA (PRSA-NY), and you don’t always need to be member of PRSA to participate in events. For example, there’s a meeting coming up on July 19th where you can learn the core strategies to make the most out of Instagram and Snapchat in media relations and content development. (Success on Instagram and Snapchat) Prices for non-members are $40, but if you like what’s on their calendar and plan on going to more events, the best deal would be to sign up for PRSA as the student price for the seminar on Instagram and Snapchat is only $15.
