Career Choices: PR, Event Planning, Social Media, Graphic Design?

posted by LIM College

Being young and having to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life is frightening. Not knowing is o.k., because even people who think they know exactly what they want often end up changing their minds. I’ve had a general idea of what fields I could see myself in since the very beginning of high school, but I am still not sure exactly what I want to pursue. I’ve always known I wanted to do something that involves celebrities and the media and pop culture, but I’ve always loved the fashion industry too. I’ve also always known that I want a career that will allow me to utilize my creativity.

LIM College has so many opportunities that help you learn about the fashion industry and get experience right away. When I started attending LIM, I quickly began to learn a lot about myself and my personality, as well as which aspects of the fashion industry I enjoy and which I don’t. I realized that some areas I thought I might be interested in actually don’t interest me that much. However, some of the experiences I had made me even more excited about what I am doing and reassured me that I am where I’m supposed to be.

For instance, working backstage at fashion shows made me realize that I really enjoy the process of setting up and working a show, so I began to look into what it would be like to work for a PR company. One of my long-term goals is to be a celebrity publicist.

I am currently looking into getting an internship in social media, event planning, or graphic design, because these are such exciting and creative fields which I know I have the skills to work in. I love expressing myself artistically and I also love keeping up with pop culture -- and it would be more than ideal if I could find a career that incorporates the two.

Graphic design is something I have always been passionate about and do in my free time -- and I will continue to do it whether it turns into a career or not. PR, social media and events all go hand-in-hand in today’s world, and I believe that they could all be amazing careers.
