Saying I DO to Volunteering at Bridal Market Week

posted by Lola Rephann

At LIM College not only do we encounter fashion experts every day, but we also are presented with many opportunities all the time to do things outside the school that will expand our knowledge of the fashion industry as a whole. Coming into the fashion world, I was very narrow-minded. I thought that the only things I really wanted to help with were Fashion Week and producing fashion shows. This is still a big goal of mine, but I also have been able to help with so many other things that I would have never seen the value in before.

Right now I am working at the New York bridal industry Market Week. There are three full days of market appointments that show the new gown collections to buyers, store executives, magazines, online and newspaper reporters, and many other people. Although you may not recognize it at first, the bridal industry is huge in fashion. Coming into LIM College I had no idea I would be helping at a bridal show, let alone really enjoying it!

So far I have worked the bridal Market Week twice and have loved it both times. Luckily, I have been able to work with the same designer twice and so I am pretty much an expert now. I have learned so much about the industry, the gowns, and bridal in general. The volunteer opportunities are valuable, to say the least, even if you have to give up your weekend to help. From experience I know that that industry experience is going to be much more beneficial in the long run than a three-day weekend will ever be.
